    In the country sides of Southern China the pleasant jingle-jangle of these ‘Noisemaker’ Bells gave a rhythm to the tranquility of a harsh lifestyle.

    Description:
    Impressive and genuine Bronze Noisemaker Bell, originating from the Eastern Zhou period, excavated in the Yunnan province of southern China, hand-crafted by indigenous village blacksmith, cast in home-made lost wax crucibles, and beautifully decorated in traditional Zhou motif, fashioned in a distinctively archaic style, carved in relief, the lower half with double-headed zoomorphic taotie masks, depicted with large protuberant eyes, exposed teeth and upper jaw only, surmounted by archaic Chinese inscriptions on the upper half and divided by a double band. The mouth of the bell is face down, with a hanging loop at the top.

    During the Shang and Zhou dynasty these types of bells were used to decorate animal harnesses for draft animals and domestic pets, worn to signal their location.
